Overview

Serves as a receptor for ADP and ATP that is coupled to G-proteins that inhibit the adenylyl cyclase second messenger system.  It is necessary for platelet aggregation and blood coagulation.

Expression

It is highly expressed in the platelets with lower levels of expression found in the brain, and is also expressed in the spinal cord and fetal brain.  The lowest levels of expression are found in the lung, appendix, pituitary and adrenal gland.
